This book was several years in the making. I began writing it three years ago and it took many starts and stops along the way. My time on bed rest was not delightful, to say the least. Many of my bed rest weeks were in the hospital undergoing blood transfusions to try to stay alive and keep my baby alive. Aside from the stress that I was under, I noticed my youngest son acting out and expressing the behavior of a child under stress. This broke my heart, yet I could do nothing but sit in my bed and watch the world move around me. I tried to come up with activities I could still do with my children from my bed- that would keep them interested and allow them to be with me. This was challenging because they were boys and not very into sitting for long periods of time to color. Those moments of fear and pain and watching my son struggle to understand what was going on led me to write this book.
Along the way, I met Angela Davids. She was the one who founded and ran the website KeepEmCookin.com– the website that I visited so often during my time on bed rest. I had always been impressed with her and what she did- so I asked her to join forces with me and help me finish the book.
Wow, was I lucky to find her because she brought so many valuable thoughts and topics to the table and she was able to contribute all of those excellent tips on the bottom of each page. She had so much experience to share and those tips will be helpful to so many moms on bed rest.
Then we were able to connect with Jennifer Lynn Becker and she agreed to be our illustrator. Jennifer was able to take our vision for each line of our book and make it come alive. She has a beautiful soul and is extremely talented and she was a pleasure to work with. Again, we hit the jackpot there.
I can’t say enough about how much this book means to both Angela and I, since we both experienced so much pain and stress during our pregnancies and time on bed rest, and to know that it will help other families and bring some comfort to moms and young children makes us very proud.
From the back cover ~
“This is a book about pregnancy bed rest from a child’s perspective. Kids ask a lot of questions, and this mom answers them with optimism and excitement. She reassures her son that although things will be different for a little while, the two of them can have a lot of fun in the meantime! Moms having a high-risk pregnancy can also use some reassurance, so we’ve included tips for you about how you can still be a fantastic mom, even when you’re stuck in bed. We’ll also show you how to make the most of your time together and guide you in talking to your child about bed rest in a positive way.
While high-risk expectant mothers are monitored by health care providers, there is still a lack of emotional support when prescribed bed rest. Much of the time they are by themselves at home or in the hospital, feeling very isolated. Stuck in Bed let’s them know they aren’t alone in what they’re going through, as well as gives them a tool to help explain their medical condition to a younger child.”
I hope you’ll consider buying our book for a friend on pregnancy bed rest or who is suffering through a high-risk pregnancy and that you’ll share it with others.
We believe Stuck in Bed can be a valuable tool for obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, social workers and psychologists who work in maternal care, as well as mental health professionals who work with young children experiencing stress related to their mother being on bed rest.
