Having a baby in the NICU can cause an enormous amount of stress on the entire family.
No NICU parent plans on a pregnancy ending with a baby in the NICU.
No NICU parent plans on leaving their baby behind when they are discharged, to go home empty handed.
No NICU parent plans to visit their baby in the in a hospital for weeks or months, instead of sharing them with their family and friends and tucking them into their crib each night at home.
No NICU parent plans on not holding their baby as much as possible, and instead watching them suffer from the other side of a plastic box.
No NICU parent is prepared for the feelings of fear and guilt that will hit them like a freight train once they have time to process what has happened.
No NICU parent understands why they feel afraid and are not as excited as they expected they would be, on the day their baby gets discharged from the hospital and is ready to come home.
These are just some of the emotions that NICU parents will feel at some point during their journey and they are ALL normal.
Dräger understands that parents need a great deal of support while their baby is in the NICU, so they partnered up with me (Jennifer Degl of Speaking for Moms and Babies, Inc.) and Deb Discenza of Preemie World to create a series of videos to help NICU parents. Our first collaborative video can be found at the Baby First website, created by Dräger, to help provide information and support to parents. Baby First is an online educational resource for parents and neonatal clinicians sponsored by Dräger and NICU University.

Dräger is dedicated to creating medical equipment that is not only highly sophisticated to include modern technology, but they are creating equipment that’s family friendly. One of their creations is the Babyleo®. The Babyleo® is Dräger’s first IncuWarmer that provides optimal thermoregulation for preemies in open care, closed care and transition. Babyleo® also has noise and light monitoring, family centered care and excellent infection prevention. I’ve had the pleasure of using the Babyleo® in demo mode at different events and it is the incubator I wish my daughter had during her four months in the NICU. This incubator is extremely efficient and family friendly and even includes different modes to encourage the family to participate in difference care activities with their baby.
Please watch and share our video with any NICU parent in need of support. We also hope you’ll share it with hospitals who may be looking for additional parent resources.
