September 9th is always a very special day for our family because it’s the day that our precious Joy was released from the NICU.
As most of you know, she was born 17 weeks early- weighing just 1 pound a 4 ounces, and she was only 11 ¾ inches long. Joy was a micro preemie. A micro preemie is a baby born before 26 weeks gestation. Her body was not just smaller than the average full-term baby, but every organ, including her digestive system and brain, were underdeveloped and not ready to operate outside of the womb.
Joy went through a lot of trauma in her first few months of life, and endured more medical procedures than most healthy adults will in their lifetime, and she survived. After 121 STRESSFUL days in the NICU, Joy came home to join our family on September 9, 2012.
She is a miracle.
The first year of her life was not all rainbows and roses, and it included a lot of medical complications, interventions, and rearranging our boys schedules and our lifestyle to accommodate her special medical needs, but we are a family and we did it. Together.
And Joy just started Kindergarten!
So today, as we reflect on how far Joy has come, I want to remind everyone that her life would not be possible if it weren’t for the excellent care and support we all received from the staff at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. They saved her, grew her, and helped our whole family prepare for what lied ahead.
This year, on Sunday September 16th, Joy will be leading the fundraising walk for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. She is an Ambassador to the walk. Actually it’s called The “Go the Distance” Walk and Family Fun Day, because it’s so much more! There will be face painting, bounce houses, bubble tents, activities, games, dance parties, characters walking around, complimentary food and drinks, and more…
Oh, and we even give you a free team shirt!
Please help us in honoring Joy’s incredible journey by registering to walk with us on the 16th, or donating in honor of “Team From Hope to Joy”. You can register and/or donate by clicking HERE.
We are so proud of Joy and we’re feeling so blessed to celebrate her 6-Year NICU Discharge Anniversary.
GO Joy and GO everyone who is a part of “Team From Hope to Joy”, whether you donated or plan to walk with us on Sunday 9/16!
Happy 6-Year NICU Discharge Anniversary to Miss Joy – my miracle, and the Ambassador to the 2018 “Go the Distance” Walk for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital!
